Regional emergency program
The Kelowna Fire Department administers the Central Okanagan Regional Emergency Plan. The plan supports all local governments including Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland, West Kelowna, Westbank First Nations and the Regional District of the Central Okanagan (RDCO).
Career & volunteer firefighters
There are opportunities to fight fires and educate the public on fire safety as a career or volunteer firefighter with the Kelowna Fire Department.
Fire hydrants
Fire hydrants have been installed throughout Kelowna to ensure our crews have an accessible and adequate water supply when required for fire suppression.
Follow these guidelines to ensure firefighters can easily access a hydrant during an emergency:
Okanagan Mountain Park fire
The Okanagan Mountain Park fire of August and September 2003 consumed over 25,000 hectares of forest and park land south and east of the city, forcing the evacuation of more than 27,000 people and destroying 239 homes on the southern edges of the city.

GlenGrow
We make GlenGrow from plant materials like lawn trimmings and prunings that have been dropped off at the Glenmore and Westbank landfills by Central Okanagan residents. The plant material is processed to remove any metal or plastic, and then chipped. GlenGrow can be used as a top dressing or to directly improve the soil.
