Cathedrals

The Work

Commissioned by the College while the artist was still a visual arts student here, this commemorative sun dial, shaped like an open book, plays with the movement of light and shadow through the steel "pages". Alan Storey comments on his public art works as follows: "Part of the philosophy in my approach is that a work of art in the public realm should intrigue and engage a passerby into an exploratory investigation of the content and its relationship to the surrounding site." (from an article by John K.

Ogopogo

The Work

Visitors to Kelowna are often seen photographing this cheerful rendering of Okanagan Lake's most famous resident, Ogopogo, originally named N'Ha-a-itk or 'Lake Serpent Spirit' by the area's First Nation peoples. This sculpture is made of painted fiberglass and along with Grizzly Bears, is one of Kelowna's oldest pieces in the City’s Public Art Collection.

The Project

The work was added to the Collection when the Public Art Program was initiated in 1998.

Whispering Leaf

The Work

An ornamental metal lattice provides support for vines and encloses a bench providing views of the park.

The Project

The work was commissioned by the City in conjunction with upgrades to the park with funding assistance from the Diggers and Weeders Garden Club.

The Artist

Edward Gooden is a sculptor practicing in Vernon who works predominantly in metal. He was born and raised in rural Manitoba where he was greatly influenced by his natural surroundings.

Okanagan Blessing Mural

The Work

This mural by Graham Chambers depicts a typical Okanagan vista.

The Project

The work was executed as part of One Block at a Time, an initiative in 2000 to beautify the street, that was led by the Communities in Bloom Committee. The project also included the metal banners that were installed along the 200 block of Leon Avenue in 2010.

The Artist

No information on the artist is available.

The Working Man

The Work

This life-sized bronze sculpture of a construction worker at rest captures the spirit of all working people.

The Project

The artist was requested by the owner of Culos Construction to create a tribute to the owner’s father who had recently passed away.

Sentinel

The Work

This work is inspired by totemic female figures known as caryatids, invoked for their wisdom and protection. Intricately woven, the piece was first created in local willow branches that had been soaked in water to create flexibility. The 3.6m long willow sections were then entwined with cuttings from apple, cherry, plum and grapevines to create a form that suggests a gentle female presence, a theme which frequently appears in MacNutt's work. The shaped piece was then encased and fired in layers of ceramic. During this process the natural materials burn away.

Running Man

The Work

Three laser-cut steel businessmen are interlocked in running motion. The briefcases carried by each “running man” hold within their clear, cast-resin casings, beads, buttons and imitation coins contributed by members of the community. The etched designs of another running man circle round the work’s columnar base. The forms are similar to depictions of the runners of ancient Greece. They were created with a computer to achieve absolute precision on a steel sheet that was then wrapped around the 2.4m high pedestal.

Circle of Friendship

The Work

This stainless steel sculpture on an inscribed granite base stands in memory of Yukihisa (Roy) Tanaka, and is testament to the close relationship between the City of Kelowna, its Japanese sister-city of Kasugai, Japan and the local Japanese-Canadian community.
