The Work
Tradition of Service symbolizes the tradition of service provided by the Kelowna Fire Department since its inception in 1905. The granite Maltese Cross base forms the foundation for 3 brass figures: 2 firefighters and a young child during a rescue. The likenesses depict Kelowna Firefighters in action from a historical and a present-day perspective. The memorial honours all Kelowna firefighters who have served the citizens of Kelowna. The cost of procurement of the monument and site preparation was approximately $30,000 with $20,000 provided by the Public Art Program.
The Project
The project was a joint initiative between the Kelowna Professional Firefighters Association, the Kelowna Paid-On-Call Firefighters (POC), and the City of Kelowna. The project included donations of volunteer time by the Professional and POC firefighters. The unveiling was part of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
