<p>All of us can take steps to reduce the risk and impact of wildfire in Kelowna. <h2>Be prepared for wildfire season</h2>\r\n
\r\n
<p>Research has shown that a house with both a fire-resistant roof and a FireSmart<span style="font-size:9px;"><sup>TM</sup></span> zone surrounding it is 85 per cent more likely to survive a wildfire.</p>\r\n
\r\n
<ul>\r\n
\t<li>If you’re replacing your roof, choose a <a href="https://firesmartcanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/FSA_FireSmart-Fact-Sheet_Roof.pdf">Class A or fire-resistant product</a>. Your roof is the most vulnerable part of your house in a wildfire because of its large size and susceptibility to flying embers (firebrands).</li>\r\n
\t<li>Dead pine needles are fuel. Keep them off your roof, out of your gutters and away from the foundation of your house.</li>\r\n
\t<li>Prune your trees, removing all live and dead branches (up to two meters from the ground), taking no more than 30 per cent of live, green canopy.</li>\r\n
\t<li>Trim back branches that are hanging over your roof and then clear your roof of leaf or needle litter.</li>\r\n
\t<li>Keep your lawn mowed and watered, as fire moves quickly through dry grass and weeds.</li>\r\n

<p>The one-in-a-hundred-year inferno began with a lightning strike on Aug. 16. The firestorm challenged personnel from over 60 fire departments across B.C., over 1,000 forestry fire fighters, contractors and loggers, as well as 1,400 members of the Canadian Armed Forces.</p>\r\n
\r\n
<p>The Regional District of the Central Okanagan’s Emergency Response Plan was put into action and the emergency operations centre (EOC) at the main fire hall on Enterprise Way worked smoothly and efficiently. Inter-agency cooperation was paramount at both the EOC and at incident command.</p>\r\n
\r\n
<h3>Recovery effort</h3>\r\n
\r\n
<p>Our Fire Recovery Team was formed in September 2003 to spearhead community recovery efforts in the wake of the fire’s devastation. The City established a recovery centre office on Bernard Avenue in space donated by RBC Royal Bank, and recovery centre staff helped process all social service requests arising from the fire.</p>\r\n
\r\n
<p>We also established the Kelowna and Area Okanagan Fire Recovery Society to coordinate the recovery effort; working in concert with other agencies and groups, society volunteers helped rebuild lives and the community.</p>\r\n

<h3>Trust fund</h3>\r\n
\r\n
<p>The Recovery Society was also charged with administering the Kelowna and Area Okanagan Fire Recovery Trust Fund, created by us to assist in the rebuilding effort. Through the generosity of our community and others across the country, the Society was able to distribute $1,402,000 to those impacted by the fire. The Society’s <a href="https://www.kelowna.ca/sites/files/1/docs/city-services/ok_mountain_park_fire_-_final_report.pdf" target="_blank">final report to Council</a> outlines the distribution of funds. The Society wound up its operations in April 2004, and the recovery centre is now closed.</p>\r\n
