They can also help your soil reach and maintain its ideal pH: the measure of a soil’s acidity (sourness) or alkalinity (sweetness) on a scale of one to 14. A neutral pH level of around seven helps most plants grow successfully.

They’re also a good source of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
